MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT WM. TRAVAUN BAILEY

Membership Has Privileges

When I first took over as president of the Bar Association, one of my stated goals was to increase membership.  It is my belief that every lawyer in Hampden County should want to be a part of an organization that does such great work on behalf of the judiciary, the bar and the community. This bar association is truly unique in the collegiality our members share. It is difficult to fully appreciate your bar association until you step outside of our county and see how other bar associations operate. I can tell you in speaking with others outside of this county, the Hampden County Bar Association is recognized and respected as one of the best in the Commonwealth.

As I have traveled around the county these past few months promoting the HCBA, many people question the benefit of joining their local bar association. The overwhelming response to why they’re not a member was, “what can the bar association do for me?”  That wasn’t surprising to me.

In this month’s message is a sampling of our Member Benefits offered by the HCBA.  Many of these may not be well known and therefore under utilized. The HCBA has worked very had over the years to create and foster relationships with companies in the community that will provide members discounted rates for patronage. Many of these Member Discounted Programs are with companies providing services you might be using now while paying full price for.

Members are entitled to discounted rates for using the following:

Bob’s Computer Services:  Computer repair and software upgrades done to provide email encryption.
Casemaker: Access to comprehensive legal research.
Catuogno & Stentel: Stenographic services.
CATICPro & Smith Brothers: Lawyers professional liability insurance.
Citizens Bank: Assistance with student loan refinancing.
ESQSites: Website design and hosting packages.
LawPay: Reduced credit card processing fees.
Paychex: Discount off Paychex payroll processing charges.

There are many more member benefits available to HCBA members; I would encourage you to visit our website to take advantage of these benefits: https://www.hcbar.org/about-us/member-benefits-and-discounts/

Please spread the word to your colleagues who aren’t members of the HCBA so they can join the bar association and start taking advantage of these wonderful benefits as well.

Acknowledgments:

On October 1, 2017, the HCBA held its 4th Annual Race Judicata -A Run for the Bar. It was a very prosperous event as we had over one hundred participants this year that walked/ran to benefit the Children’s Law Project and the Colonel Archer B. Batista Veteran’s Scholarship Fund. I want to thank the Race Judicata committee for its hard work and congratulate them on another successful event. I want to give our sponsors a special thanks for their support. To see a full list of our sponsors click here.  If you did not participate this year, it’s not to early to start planning for next year! To see photos of this year’s event click here

HCBA ARBITRATION/MEDIATION SERVICE

The Hampden County Bar Association Arbitration & Mediation Service maintains a roster of highly qualified lawyers and retired judges for arbitration, mediation, or case evaluations. The Arbitration and Mediation Service is proud to announce the addition of Attorney Matthew J. King to our panel.  Attorney King is an impressive addition to our roster. Our panel members, as an accommodation to the Bar Association, have agreed to serve at substantially reduced rates for arbitrations, mediations or case evaluations. Indeed, many of our panel members independently mediate and arbitrate cases at higher rates. Why not conserve resources by coordinating your arbitrations or mediations through the Hampden County Bar Association? We encourage you to support your bar association by keeping the Arbitration and Mediation Service in mind for alternative dispute resolution. For a complete list of arbitrators/mediators and the type of cases they handle, please click here.

For information about the service, renewals or becoming a member of the panel, please contact our office by calling (413) 748-7951 or via email. This information may also be obtained by visiting our website.

LAWYER REFERRAL & INFORMATION SERVICE

The Hampden County Bar Association's LRIS meets American Bar Association standards for lawyer referral and has a Reduced Rate Panel. Anyone interested in participating in the lawyer referral program can contact our office at 413-732-4660 or via email.

In addition to our experienced panel, attorneys have the option to participate in the Limited Assistance Representation (LAR) panel. This program is free to attorneys participating in the standard (traditional) LRIS program. There is also an option to participate only
in the LAR program for Hampden County Bar Association members. For more information on the new program, please call the HCBA office or contact us via email. You can also find information on our website at www.hcbar.org.

Within the last month, attorneys have submitted over $8,337 in LRIS referral percentage payments, a result of over $55,580 in client fees.

If you receive a call from a potential client looking for assistance in an area of law that you do not practice, why not refer them to the Hampden County Bar Association's Lawyer Referral & Information Service? All members of the LRIS are your experienced colleagues. Support your LRIS in providing quality referrals in our community!

The LRIS is currently looking for attorneys who handle civil rights and education law.

LOMAP - LAW OFFICE MANAGEMENT TIP

MassLOMAP is a service provided to Massachusetts licensed (or soon to be) attorneys to establish and institutionalize professional office practices and procedures. MassLOMAP is a program of Lawyers Concerned for Lawyers.

This month's law practice management tip from the Massachusetts Law Office Management Assistance Program (MassLOMAP):

Tips on Law Practice & Lawyer Life from LOMAP and LCL:

How many times are you distracted from your work on a typical day? Find out how to reclaim your time and money from distractions - in 30 minutes or less, with our next edition of Webinars for Busy Lawyers on November 15th. Our webinars are always FREE but spots are limited so register now!

Lawyering is a tougher challenge than ever according to research published last year, ie. before we were even immersed in the rapid changes of 2017. Fortunately, a National Task Force on Lawyer Well-Being has assembled. And two months ago, they published recommendations for us all to contribute to a Movement to Improve Well-Being in the Legal Profession, which includes modeling self-care. So every Tuesday, we'll be sharing a story or two from our staff about how we each spent time intentionally focusing on self-care over the weekend. You can watch our inaugural effort here!

LCL and its LOMAP program provide free practice management, mental health counseling, and recovery services to Massachusetts lawyers, law students, and judges.

Leadership: Do We Have it all Wrong?

Susan Letterman White, a practice advisor at LOMAP believes that law firms need credible leaders, but that the selection criteria is counterproductive to the needs of those firms. She recently published this article, Leadership: Do We Have it all Wrong?, that suggests that the way law firm leaders are selected is flawed and worse, actually at odds with what firms need to be successful in today’s constantly changing world.  Click here to take a survey, designed to explore whether problems that firms are facing, such as high associate attrition rates, may be linked to using the wrong selection criteria.
